'Defiance'

So, I've managed to catch a baby version of what the parents came down with - dad had a nasty chest cold, mom came down with bronchitis and sinusitis.  Thankfully, I seem to be running just a slightly high fever and a nasty cough; of course, it's only day two so who knows if this'll get worse or better.  I went in late to work yesterday (I kept waking up coughing) and then ended up going home because the cough just got worse.

I'm taking advantage by napping on the couch and catching up on the eight billion shows I have DVRed.  I managed to finally watch the last three episodes of Once Upon a Time the other week and now I need to catch up on Defiance, Under the Dome, Crossing Lines, and Motive.

I'm still massively on the fence with Defiance - there's a lot that I like, like Nolan and his relationship with his daughter, the sneaky Tarrs, the world building, the underhanded twists.  But I really don't buy Amanda as mayor and there's just something that's not clicking with me.  I'm three episodes away from the end now, having watched two this morning, and I just - don't care as much as I should?  I really want to like this show, I love so many of the characters, but it's lacking a cohesive element or something for me.

I really, really wish I liked it more.

I totally feel you on Defiance. I like the diversity, I like that there ARE females in central roles, and I like a lot of elements of it, but... I'm not in love with any of the characters, and it seems like a lot of lazy tropes dressed up as not-lazy tropes. There doesn't seem to be an overarching gestalt in the storytelling, and it sets up aliens as ignorant or backwards, or cruel and violent without the understanding that would make those commentaries reflections on humanity.

Basically it's a pile of meh for me.
