Is having received a little over 11,000 e-mails for work in a year a lot?  I'm just trying to figure out if I should be stunned by the number of e-mails I received or if it's just kind of normal.

That's about 50 emails a day - not too egregious.

Broken down like that, it seems way less "wtf". It's a huge jump from last year, where I had a little over 9,000, though.

It depends on your work.

I happen to have the stats for the email servers I maintain in front of me because we're in the middle of an upgrade. The median is 10 or fewer emails in a day BUT the average is around 20 emails, swayed upwards by a couple clients who run large companies and refuse to use spam filtering.

Wait, there are people who refuse to use spam filtering? I check my Postini account every other day for work and I can't imagine having that much crap in my work inbox every day. It's bad enough with the stuff that creeps through.

Yes, and I hate them, because trying to get the spam filter (which filters at a server level) to exclude their email accounts is a serious PITA.

I just checked -- 39,000. I am depressed now.

For your kind of job, that sounds about right. I have a friend who does communications. She averages 400 emails a day.

400 a day? I can't even imagine being able to keep up with that volume; I'd just want to set fire to the whole thing and start again.

I'm pretty sure the jump between '10 and '11 is tied into the organizational membership stuff I'm doing. I can't imagine how it'll skyrocket when we actively start promoting it next year.

I used to average 70-100 a day when I was doing tech support, not counting trouble tickets and phone calls.
