Karen was reading that one a while ago - actually, that works. I've alternating what I read (urban fantasy - horror - fantasy, back and forth), so 60 and 64 work out well. :D

Stirling just finished a manuscript, actually themed on Urban Fantasy - A Taint in the Blood.

There are sample chapters availible on his website. Interesting take - he grounds it very much in scientific approach, rather than straight-up magical.

Oooh! I hadn't heard he was doing Urban Fantasy. So cool! (goes off to read) So are you giving him a second chance or still think he's jumped the shark? (grins)

What I've seen of the Taint certainly reminds me a lot of his early stuff. He sounds like he's having fun writing again - (DTF seemed a bit off to me in that respect, it felt like a chore-written work)

(nods) The sequels to DTF don't seem bad in that way. Although that could be because he's linking it in with his Island in the sea of time verse.

Although I think most writers end up getting tired of things if it's all people want to see them write. So the new story/new world could be reviving him a bit. The sudden jump in popularity must have been slightly startling at the time.

Exactly. That always had me amused as hell. Interestingly, it was only after I'd read 'Dies the Fire' that I went out and found the rest of his works. Have only read the Island series so far. But I'll check out this Urban fantasy one.

I looked at the Mars book but I'm still not sure whether I'd like it or not. May see if the library has it.

Island stuff, imo, is his best work so far.

I doubt you'd like the Draka or General series but his earliest stuff is a collaborative fantasy cycle called the 5th Millenium, which is Sword and Sorcery (but with a twist of course). Also 'Peshawar Lancers' and 'Conquistador' also might appeal to you. The last two should definately be library-availible, it will be a year before Taint is even published.

5th Millenium books are pretty hard to snag, though. Used book stores mostly - unless they've been reprinted.

He also did a sort of homage to classic pulp stuff, a What if world where Mars and Venus are inhabited. Very much in style of Edgar Burroughs.

(nodnods) I'll see if I can find the 5th Millenium stuff. There's a couple of really good second hand stores around here. I've seen Conquistador about the place. Keep meaning to pick it up and read it. I'm reading the 'His Dark Materials' books at the moment, since I was able to pick them up as one volume. (Even if I could use it to brain people with.)

Finished the second book in the Beka Cooper series by Tamora Pierce as well. Fun fantasy police procedural.

Very true. Unless you're able to raid a hospital or two. I figure I could trick someone out of giving me a bike or two on the first day but there's no way in hell I'd be able to leave my family, and my brother lives right in the middle of Sydney.

(nodnods) I won't spoil the plot but clingy females who are completely idiotic tend to make me want to hit them.

I much prefer her guardian books.

Alsoalso, Sheepfarmer's Daughter is excellent and still one of my favourite books - along with the rest of the series. It's definitely D&D style fantasy though but I don't think you'll mind that. Gah, want to go on and on about it but I would totally spoil the books.

(nodnods) Could be why I love her writing so much. The battle sequences are just awesome. Oh, Jen, if you haven't, check out the Serrano Legacy series and 'Remnant Population' after you read the Paksenarrion stuff. They're Sci-Fi rather then fantasy but very cool.

Hmm - I'll have to see. Honestly, I really don't get into much 'sci-fi' stuff - the moment books go into space, I tend to not get into it. Oddly, though, space shows/movies I adore.

(nodnods) sci-fi can be very touch and go. It really depends on the writer. I'm a fan of all the degrees of sci-fi as well as all the degrees of fantasy but I cut my teeth reading on the old pulp sci-fi magazines. Library teacher I had loved to give me old books to read once she saw that I was interested.

I think the weirdest one I ever read was about an expedition that ends up getting eaten and their brains then fight it out to be the dominant one in the newly formed 'creature' that results.

Yep - iirc she started as a ranker and retired as a leutenant:) She's not one of my favorite writers (her style just doesn't click with me) but she certainly knows what she's talking about in terms of tactics, organization, etc.
