The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

I think my first reaction after putting the book down this afternoon was one of "Why did I read this before?  Why hadn't I heard of this book before?"  It's one of those books that's hard to realize that it's a first novel - I've come across a few of those and the books always sound like a seasoned writer penned them.

Written in first person, Fforde never the less manages to capture the essence of the people surrounding the main character, Thursday.  He turns potential tongue in cheek secondaries into characters the reader comes to not only enjoy but also to care about.  Even characters that are only around for a chapter or two, if that in some cases, are well-liked enough that you honestly care about what happens to them.

What could have been a farce of a book, and as my roommate Ben said, a fanfiction and a bad one at that quickly became a really well written novel.  Parts were tongue in cheek but in a way that made you part of the joke and realizing that it wasn't a joke; it was just damned good narrative.  You were taken surprise along with the main character and at no point did I want to put down the book and move onto something else.  It wasn an enjoyable, fun book but wasn't one of those airplane books you buy just to pass the time.

My only regret is that it's over and I don't yet have any of the other books that Fforde wrote.
Rating:  Thumbs up
Recommend?  God, a thousand times over.  If you haven't heard of Jasper Fforde before know, I suggest you go aquaint yourself with his writing.  It's well worth it.
