Yesterday, Ben, Arthur, Todd, a few of Todd's friends and myself went out to a pick your own fruit farm - we went there for peaches but much to my delight, we found that they had blackberries as well. I decided to focus more on the berries than the peaches and I discovered a few things.
One, picking berries is harder than it looks. Two, eating berries right off the bushes is something that really needs to be experienced because ZOMG. Experienced more than once. And three, if you're picking blackberries you will come away looking as if you've killed a man in the bushes. That stuff took forever to come off.
Arthur, Ben and I combined our boxes and I decided to pick up two small boxes at the little store - because I decided that I needed to make pie. Despite never having made pie before in my life.
Cake, yes. Pie, no.
I skipped making my own crust for my first pie and got Pillsbury prerolled stuff which is very good, actually. The pie filling was easy: five cups of fresh blackberries, 3/4's cup of sugar and some flour. Mix and pour into the pie crust and put the other pie crust on top.
...I even made the pretty little cut out things and we're going to ignore the fact that they were SO OFF CENTER. And making the little bumpy things on the crust is hard as well. Add two scoops of vanilla ice cream to the side and...
Verdict? Holy crap, one of the most amazing things I think I've ever made. This almost rivals the margarita cake I made for Marissa's party. I had my second piece (first piece from last night) tonight and it was only due to the fact that I didn't have enough time this morning that I didn't have that second slice for breakfast.
Such a good end to a really good weekend.
