Author's Notes: My brain is being eaten ALIVE. *coughs* Kaylee's having some massive problems sleeping after Jubal Early's attack, so Zoe and Wash come to the rescue.
A week after Jubal Early's attack on the ship things had started to settle down to almost normal. More normal than usual, even, considering that it seemed that River was hitting an incredibly lucid period. While money may have been tight it wasn't like they could survive until they hit a planet.
Zoe was the first one to notice that something wasn't normal with Kaylee. She mentioned it to Mal who asked her to keep an eye on the mechanic because he certainly wasn't good at being subtle. And they had a feeling that she'd spook if it was brought right up.
So, she watched and she waited. She'd known Kaylee for a good many years now, nearly as long as she'd known Wash, so right away she knew that something wasn't right.
Kaylee was spending less and less time in the engine room, which was pretty much the first, and biggest warning sign. After watching her fix something and then bolt out of there like a wild rabbit, Zoe went in. Looking around, her jaw clenched tightly.
The hammock that had once been Kaylee's bed almost as often as the one in her room had obviously not been slept in for some time. It was tidy and not filled with blankets and the odd machine parts like it normally was.
Next clue was the simple fact that the girl wasn't sleeping at all. Or at the most, catching a few naps here and there. But her actual room had barely been visited and if she slept in her bed, she didn't sleep for long.
Finally enough was enough.
Zoe caught her in the kitchen as Kaylee was trying to drink down the sludge they called coffee on this ship. Wordlessly, she grabbed the cup and dumped it.
"Hey, Zoe, what was that for?" Kaylee stared at her and then went for another.
"That's enough. I think it's time you went to sleep."
"I...I can't. Got work to do. Need to keep this ship runnin’, you know?"
She made to move around her, white faced and scared, but Zoe was faster than her on a good day and this was obviously not a good day. Standing in front of her she shook her head. "You're not going anywhere, Kaylee, except bed. Don't care where you sleep, be it your room or the hammock..."
"No! I can't!" Tears started to form at the corners of her eyes. "I can't because all I see is him standing there, threatenin' me. An' me bein' too scared ta do anythin' but listen to him."
Reaching out, Zoe got a firm hold of her shoulders. "I think anyone gettin' threatened with the idea of rape and killin' in their own engine room, mei-mei," she said, using the endearing term that really only the boys did, though she felt the same but she normally had no use for nicknames, "has a right to be good and scared. We need you whole not only to make this ship run but…we wouldn't be the same without you."
And as scary as that was it was the gorram truth.
Sobbing a little, Kaylee let herself be drawn against the older woman. "I can't sleep anywhere," she said, voice cracking. "I don't feel safe."
"Come with me then. I think I know exactly where you'll feel safe."
~~~
Sliding down the stairs to her and Wash's room, she quickly woke him up, suppressing the laugh at the startled snore. "You might want to throw some clothes on, honey," Zoe said, tossing him a shirt.
"Why? What's..." Wash peered up through the hatch. "Kaylee? What's wrong?"
"Can't sleep because of nightmares an', well, you know what happened in the engine room due to that bun tyne-shung duh ee-dway-ro. She don't know it yet but she's sleeping in here because she's gorram near dropping dead on us from exhaustion."
Wash was up and pulling the shirt on half way through the explanation. No questions were needed and there was no reason he was going to argue with his wife when he was in complete agreement. "Come on down, bao bay," he coaxed, helping her down the ladder when he noticed how shaky she was. Pulling her to him in a loose hug, she gave her a grin. "Hey, it'll be okay. Zoe's real good about keeping the nightmares away." He whispered to her, "I think she scares them."
Kaylee giggled a little. "You all don't have to do this," she said, despite how good that bed looked and how much the idea of company while she slept appealed to her.
"Nope, ain't got to do a thing," Zoe agreed, pulling down the covers. "Now wanting to...that's a different subject."
"But..."
"Don't make me drug you and carry you over my shoulder," Wash warned. "You know how fragile I am."
That got another giggle, this one not as sniffly sounding. Nudging off her shoes, Wash and Zoe managed to push, prod and cajole her into climbing into the middle of the bed, but she finally went. A few seconds went by as Zoe disarmed herself and got comfortable and Wash closed up the hatch.
The bed creaked under their weight as they slide in, all a little awkward now as what to do. But even in her exhausted state of mind and being, Kaylee still pierced the hearts of even the most rough on board. Zoe nudged her over, muttering about sleeping with two bed pigs, and with only a little hesitation, threw an arm over the mechanic's waist and onto her husband.
They shared a warm look over her head as Kaylee settled down on Wash's shoulder, feeling her body relax for the first time since the attack as the warmth from being in the middle filled her up.
"So...you think I can make Jayne all jealous by saying I slept with two women?"
The dark was pierced by the sound of two hands hitting him and a giggle.
