The rule I tend to follow is that you don't wear brown beneath black - and by that I mean beneath in a vertical sense when you're standing AND (although less so) in the underneath sense. So:
brown shirt and black top beneath = fine brown shirt, black trews, black shoes = fine brown jacket over black outfit = fine brown top beneath black shirt = a little dodgy brown shoes with black trews = DEATH
But generally the REAL rule is that if you have to ask, just follow the rules. Breaking the rules and getting away with it takes a self-confidence that you won't show if you're worried about whether what you're wearing is right.
(Which means, since you think it's cute, you're probably fine)
