In the beginning, it was just Zoe and Mal. And a busted down, rusting old ship. It could fly about as well as Mal could. That is, if he was tossed off a cliff at an incredibly high velocity.

The next addition was Wash, because, well, in order to fly they needed someone to fly it. He spent days trying to muck around in the machinery parts, just to see if he could recognize something. And also spent days trying to get Zoe to actually say more than one or two sentences at him.

Both jobs were equally frustrating but worth it.

So Mal went and got himself a genius mechanic named Bester.

Wash never really liked Bester.

Wash perked up, narrowly avoiding bashing his head against the bottom of the flight panel. There was a ruckus, he realized, scooting back out so he could hear. That was certainly Mal's voice. Mal's very loud, very irate voice.

And it wasn't directed at him.

With a grin, he abandoned his work in order to watch the fun.

Zoe was already peering down from the top of the stairs when Wash arrived and he grinned cheerfully at her when he joined her. She just blinked at him and returned to watching so he followed her gaze.

"So, what is it? Space monkeys? A herd of miniature dogs?" He brightened. "Ohh, I know! Has Mal learned to juggle geeselings?"

"Goslings," Zoe corrected but she was obviously distracted.

And he knew why. The sight below him was possibly even better than watching Mal juggle baby geese. The captain was in full "You breath, I punch" mode and the object of his anger was their mechanic.

Their rude, overbearing, sometimes drugged out, no good mechanic who had them stuck on this gorram planet for far too long.

This made getting out of bed in the morning completely worth it.

Leaning over to get a better look, Wash blinked and leaned even more, nearly falling over. Zoe almost let him tumble down to the floor below but sighed and yanked him back to his feet. He just grinned at her and she gritted her teeth.

"Who's that?" he asked, pointing to the girl standing near the front of Serenity, surrounded by a couple of bags. And looking equally embarrassed and incredibly joyful all at the same time.

"That," she responded, "is our new mechanic."

Wash's eyes opened slightly right as Bester decided to open his gorram mouth.

"You can't just kick me off the ship!" he yelled, waving his arms about like a loon. "I'm your 'genius mechanic' remember?"

"Well looks like I went and found me another genius mechanic," Mal retorted.

"What, you lettin' some jien hwo take--ta ma duh!"

Wash let out a cackle of glee as he watched Bester crumple from the punch to the nose from Mal. Never had he liked his new employer so much as right now. Even Zoe smiled a little bit at the sight. No one, it seemed, had liked the man very much.

"You don't make disparaging remarks about a lady," Mal said calmly, bending down and grabbing the fallen man by the collar. Half dragging, half carrying him towards the hatch, he continued. "Unless the lady in question happened to do something to deserve it. You don't make remarks about my mechanic and I don't ever want to see your sorry face--here--again!" With some effort since it seemed someone had been getting into the extra rations, he cheerfully tossed him off the ship.

"Kaylee, meet Zoe. She's my second in command so any questions you have that I'm not around to answer--"

"Or pass off on me to answer."

"Or that too, you go to her."

Kaylee gave a small wave but a bigger smile that seemed hard to resist, even for Zoe.

"And that grinning fool over there is Wash, our pilot. He's a good pilot, regardless of his gorram mustache."

Grinning like he was fong luh, Wash waved as she laughed and grinned even brighter. "Welcome on board!" he called.

Oh yeah, it was a good start to the day.

*grins* Thank you. It's hard NOT to do the swearing, since I think it's so in the characters to do it. Yay for having a webpage with the swears they used in the show.

Hee, thank you! *beams, dances* Was a little considered about writing him when I first grabbed the pair, since Kaylee's a little easier, but it's much better than I thought. Finding a nice balance between goofy and not is hard.
