So...

Why, exactly, is wearing brown with black bad?  It seems people are split on this - I think I'm leaning towards "don't care, it can look cute" (aiee, I think I'm going to get beaten).  I've got on black pants and shoes (with the lace on the front and the cream peaking through) with a purple shirt (Laaaauren, it's the shiny one you like on me) and a brown under shirt - it peaks out since the top shirt is buttoned on one button, doesn't show a lot and I think it looks cute.

Would this get me the frowny face from the Laurens? :D

The rule I tend to follow is that you don't wear brown beneath black - and by that I mean beneath in a vertical sense when you're standing AND (although less so) in the underneath sense. So:

brown shirt and black top beneath = fine
brown shirt, black trews, black shoes = fine
brown jacket over black outfit = fine
brown top beneath black shirt = a little dodgy
brown shoes with black trews = DEATH

But generally the REAL rule is that if you have to ask, just follow the rules. Breaking the rules and getting away with it takes a self-confidence that you won't show if you're worried about whether what you're wearing is right.

(Which means, since you think it's cute, you're probably fine)

It just clashes, honey. You can get away with it, but it will always clash. It's like black and that dark navy blue, or matching green pants with a slightly-different-shade-of green shirt. You won't get funny looks, but it disrupts the colours.

I just dislike brown in general.
