Author's Notes: None of these characters are mine, sadly. And many thanks to the wonderful Lise for patiently betaing this! This is the second HP fic I've ever written, first one to see the light of day. Any suggestions on other places to post this would be met with kisses and hugs, really.
The Potter house was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night. Sirius Black peered around, suspicious, as if expecting James to jump out from the shadows and hex him. Actually, yes, he was rather expecting James to do something like that since last week Sirius had done the same thing to him when dinner had been at his place.
Shrugging, he poked at a shrubbery with his hand as he headed up to the porch. Maybe James had forgotten? After all he was all busy and respectable these days, what with a wife and a baby on the way.
Respectable? Who wanted to be that?
The knock on the door was quick and to the point as he stuck his head in the door. "Oi, James! Anyone home?"
"Come on in, Sirius," Lily called out from somewhere in the back, probably the kitchen. "And take off your shoes!"
"You don't know if they're dirty," he retorted, stopping to nudge off the rather mud-soaked items in question.
"It's Friday and that means trouble in the afternoons." Lily appeared in the hallway and glanced down with a smile. "And you never bother to use the cleaning spell."
"Where's the fun in that?" Sirius gave her a roguish smile. "Hello, Lily. Where's James?"
"I sent him off for some last minute items. England won the Quidditch match..." She wisely ignored the loud shout from behind her as Sirius went into an impromptu celebratory dance behind her. "...so we wanted to have something to drink to their win. Or at least, something you boys can drink."
He watched in vague amusement as she patted her rounded stomach and followed her into the kitchen. Actually, he was at a slight loss what with James not in the house. It wasn't that he disliked Lily but most of his dealings with her had been with his friend close by.
If he wanted to be brutally honest with himself he still resented her a little bit. James and Lily had married right after graduation from Hogwarts and even before that it had seemed like group had been drifting apart. Sitting down at the kitchen table, he poked at the papers he found there. There was a chance that they would have drifted even without her and James falling in love but there was no way to know.
And Sirius missed the good old days when it was just the four boys doing their own thing. This quiet life James had found himself befuddled him to no end.
"Er, where's the others then?"
"I told them to arrive later," Lily stated quietly. "Or, well, I told you to arrive earlier."
Something was amiss. Sirius looked around worriedly. "Whyyyy?" he asked slowly, wondering about possible escape routes. Maybe she was unhappy about him abusing James--just a bit of fun, they'd told her with grins, as she chided them on their dirty appearance afterwards--at dinner last time. He knew how to handle James but Lily?
Maybe he could make it to the front door before she hexed him, he mused. He was taller than she was and the growing belly had to slow her down.
Right?
"Oh, don't look like I'm going to do something horrid to you," she snapped but then laughed, taking a seat next to him.
He resisted the urge to scoot away.
Sirius enjoyed many things in life--many, many things--but not knowing something was not one of them.
"So what are you going to do?" Normally he'd make a comment about how if she couldn't resist his charms she should have said so ages ago. But that would most certainly get him hexed.
"James and I have been talking about our future and the future of our baby." Lily smiled again as her hands settled on her stomach. "I know the two of you are very close but he was being such a git about asking you that I finally decided to take matters into my own hands."
Oh, this probably was not going to a good place. "What'd he want to ask me?"
She took a deep breath. "Sirius, we want you to be our baby's godfather."
The only sound in the room was the nearly audible jaw-drop from Sirius which was quickly followed up by him falling off of his chair with a loud thumping noise.
"Are you alright?" It was clear she was trying not to laugh at him.
"I...you...James...what?!"
"Godfather, you." Lily pointed to him and then pointed to her stomach. "Godchild, baby."
This smacked of all kinds of being responsible, Sirius thought wildly, not bothering to get up off the floor because he was certain he'd just tumble right back off again. Staring up at her he closed his eyes. Maybe if he counted to ten he'd wake up back in his flat with a hangover.
Sadly, at number seven Lily poked him in the ribs with her toe.
"Why me?" he demanded, crossing his arms over his chest. "It's not that I'm not flattered, I am, really." There was a pause. "I think. But I'm not quite good at the being responsible thing. Why not Remus? He reeks of responsibility!"
The look on her face nearly broke his heart. "We wanted to make both you and Remus the baby's godfathers," she said, softly enough that he had to strain to hear. "I love Remus, I really do and so does James. But he's a werewolf, Sirius, and while that doesn't matter to us it might make a difference if something were to happen. Godparents are supposed to be there if something happens to the parents--"
"...I thought they just gave out presents and things like that," he interrupted, eyes widening slightly. More responsibility!
"Well, yes, there is that. You're supposed to spoil the baby rotten." There was a laugh that eased some of the strain in the room and she winked at him. "But if something happens to James and I, the godparents would watch over our child. And...you know as well as I do that it's more likely for something to happen to Remus first than the rest of us."
At that, Sirius refused to meet her eyes.
"Peter?"
"I...just don't think he's ready for this type of thing."
"And you think I am? Are you daft, Lily? I'm Sirius Black! My name still makes professors at Hogwarts cry and hide in their class rooms. I'm not responsible, I'm the...the...anti-responsible! I can't be responsible for someone else."
"Just think about it? Please? For James."
That was cheating and he told her so. "But, alright, you win. I'll think about it. That's not a promise that I'll do it."
Lily relaxed in her chair at that. "Thank you, you don't know how much that means to--oh!" She leaned forward suddenly as she tightened her hands on her stomach.
Sirius' own hands fluttered as he stared at her. "Your not going to labor are you? That's not allowed when I'm here or when James is out!"
"Now who's being daft?" Lily chuckled. "No, the baby just kicked. Or, as James insists, the baby is practising being the top Quidditch player."
"James would say that," Sirius muttered, staring intently at her stomach as he watched her shirt ripple slightly. That...was slightly gross.
"Do you want to feel?"
"What? No! That means touching." And James certainly had said something about no touching. Granted, ages ago, but when his friend got that look in his eye, Sirius remembered.
She shot him a wry look. "Feeling normally means touching and...are you sitting on your hands?"
"I am not."
"Yes, you are."
"Not."
"Are."
"No...hey!" Sirius would later deny any rumors about an unmanly squeaky as Lily reached down and tugged his hand out from under his knees. He didn't fight her all that much as she placed his much larger hand on her belly but only because he didn't want to be responsible for having her fall.
Really.
He sighed. "I'm not feeling anything," he started and then stopped as something moved. "By Merlin's ghost..."
Beaming down at him, Lily snickered. "Not so bad then?"
Sirius didn't respond and didn't take his hand away even when she removed hers. The little bugger was quite active and he wasn't sure how Lily could handle all that wiggling in her stomach. It was still kind of gross but rather fascinating at the same time.
"If you press your ear where your hand is, you can probably hear things."
Black eyes flickered up to hers and then back down again. "May I?" Sirius asked and he could tell she was surprised by the hint of shyness that had seeped into his words.
"Of course. Here." Reaching out, Lily pushed his hair behind his ear and let him lean in closer.
Eyes bugging out slightly, he nearly pulled back in shock but kept his head still. Animagus form not withstanding his hearing had always been rather keen and this was just...it was just...
"Bloody hell."
"That was James' reaction as well."
"What was my reaction?" James asked as he wandered into the kitchen with a few bags in his arms. "What the hell are you doing, Sirius?" But it was obvious he knew the answer to his question already.
"Sod off, James," Sirius muttered with a smirk, "I'm listening to my godson, the future Quidditch player."
