To make myself feel a little better...

Title: Clueless
Fandom: Firefly (Wash, Kaylee)
Characters: Kaylee, Simon, Wash, Mal, Jayne
Prompt: Christmas
Word Count: 1,486
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: So, I went to write a Thanksgiving story and it turned into a slightly, kind of Christmas one. Kaylee's frustration with Simon finally gets to the point where she takes matters into her own hands.

Biting her lip, Kaylee peered at her reflection in the dingy mirror and then beamed as she clapped her hands in delight. Normally, she was a little more...patient with Simon, attempting to bring him to the point where he actually said or did something. Anything, really! But it had been a long time for her and she was starting to get a little twitchy.

Inara had been more than willing to give her some tips on ways to speed up the process and then she had mentioned mistletoe. Apparently on Earth-That-Was they used to hang the stuff around in order to have an excuse to kiss. Well if she needed an excuse it was certainly now, she thought, rearranging it behind her ear. She had managed to find some when they had landed planet side the last time and smuggled it on board.

Dashing from her room she nearly skipped down to the infirmary. Simon was a smart man, one of the smartest she knew when it came to book learning that was for sure. He had to know what mistletoe meant and with her coming down to see him he would have to get her intentions.

Right?

Of course he would, no question about it.

Peeking through the doors, Kaylee's smile widened even further as she saw Simon bent over some of his files--probably River's latest test results--muttering to himself.

Without looking, he muttered in her direction, "River, could you hand me the rest of your files, mei-mei? They'll be right next to the door."

"Well, I ain't River but I can find my way around well enough," Kaylee replied cheerfully, scooping up the mentioned files as Simon jumped slightly, turning to return her smile.

"I'm sorry, Kaylee, River was supposed to be back soon but..." He rolled his eyes in a way that said "irritated brother" and not "worried doctor". She preferred the brother part when it came to the two of them, meant that things might be getting back to normal for them. And that meant he might be willing to look at other things besides what ailed his sister.

"No worries, I used ta confuse the rest of the crew when I was working until I started learning their steps."

"Learning their steps?"

"Yep. Cap'n walks different than, say, Wash. First one is always heavy and deliberate, feeling things out, you know? Wash has a lighter step almost like he can't keep his feet on the ground but is tryin' ta convince himself to stay put. Inara's got a dainty but stubborn step ta her." She winked at Simon. "'Specially when the Cap'n's been about, right? Jayne's are heavy as well but slower, grumpier..."

"Well, that certainly would be Jayne."

Giggling, Kaylee continued as she sidled further into his sight, angling her head just so as she tried to make the mistletoe more visible. "Zoe used ta try to walk around quiet like but once the battlefield starting leaving her, she let herself make more noise. Kind of like a not-quite feral cat these days."

Simon stared at her and blinked in amazement. "That is quite a feat," he said, ducking away from a poke as she groaned at him. "What about the 'new' additions to the crew?"

Kaylee thought about that for a second, not having had as much time to study the latest three as she would have liked. "Sheppard tends ta walk tired but quiet, not shuffling like a man his age might but startin' ta come close. River is kinda like her name, soft one second and hard and fast the next. I suppose out of everyone she could hide herself from me real well but she don't."

"What about me?"

She grinned at him. "Still a bit hesitant like yer tryin' ta feel the place out but differently than Mal and you tend to stop and start a lot."

"That is amazing, Kaylee." He smiled when she blushed. "No, I'm serious. Not everyone has that type of ability to learn about people."

"People are just another type of machine, ain't they?" she responded, shrugging her shoulders. A part of her was getting anxious so she leaned more to the side so he could see the mistletoe.

Simon gave her a funny look and then looked closer, making her heart skip a beat.

"Kaylee?"

"Yes, Simon?"

"Why do you have...is that parsley in your hair?"

Kaylee's eyes narrowed sharply and she stomped her foot in frustration, causing Simon to suddenly look very confused and lost. "Ohhh, why do I even bother?! You can go gun hoe-tze bee dio-se!" Turning about, she stomped out of the Infirmary, snarling at Jayne when he got in her way.

The older man peered cautiously through the doors and then grinned at the flummoxed doctor. "Did it again? I knew there was some good fer having you around. The entertainment on this boat sky rockets."

Simon stared as the doors closed again and then thumped himself repeatedly in the middle of his forehead.

So mad that she couldn't even cry yet Kaylee had started slamming things around in the engine room with vengeance. Did she have to spell it out in giant letters in a medical file or something? Or was that not even enough to catch his attention?

"Showin' up gorram naked wouldn't catch his attention!" she snarled, throwing a wrench so hard it bounced off the shelf and out into the hallway. "Ask me if I'd hurt myself in some accident or somethin'. Ai ya stupid men! Can't see what's right 'fore their own eyes."

Maybe he didn't want to see, she thought, lower lip trembling just a bit. She wasn't fine like Inara or even half as pretty as those girls at the shindig she and the Cap'n attended. A bright smile and the right notion with the engine didn't get you very far with men like Simon who were used to gentle ladies who didn't curse much.

In her frustration Kaylee wasn't up to paying much attention to the comings and goings of those footsteps she had been telling Simon about. So when a timid voice said, "Kaylee?" she was already in the process of throwing something out through the door.

"Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh!" Wash screamed as manly as he could as he dropped to the ground to get out of the way of the solid, broken part from the engine. It made a spectacular crashing noise in the hallway followed by even more spectacular cursing that had to come from nonother than Mal.

"...Wash!" Frustration and anger pushed to the side she skidded next to him and looked down, completely horrified. "I didn't hear ya walking this way! You okay?"

Wash weakly waved a hand in her general direction. "Oh, I'm just fine and dandy, don't you worry about me. I would, however, worry about your floor which might need a good mopping once I've changed my pants."

A voice shouted in from the hallway, "And I'm just peachy keen, little girl, don't go asking about your gorram Captain now, you hear?"

Groaning in embarrassment, Kaylee sank down to the floor as Wash sat up, gingerly poking himself in the back of the head. "Cap'n send you in here to talk me down?"

"He said my soothing and pleasing manner would soon erase all signs of irritation from our lovely mechanic."

"I also said he's built better for target practice than I am," Mal added, leaning against the door frame.

"Sorry, Cap'n."

"Ain't nothin' wrong with a little bit of anger..."

"Especially when it's deserved," Wash said angelically. "Except when it's towards me, of course, then it's just wrong."

"But I was afeared I'd find you ripping up Serenity and using us all for target practice. Now I like my engine and my own parts in one piece--and I like my mechanic without tears on her face--so what say you we clean up this mess and go play that game we were going to earlier?"

Opening her mouth to respond she was brought short when Wash's face suddenly came into close view. She almost nearly toppled over as she flailed a bit, leaning back so she could bring his face into focus.

"Hey, mistletoe!" With a grin, he leaned over and kissed her on her cheek. "Might want that removed before Jayne gets any ideas."

Staring at Wash for a second and then at Mal over head, as he muttered about what he'd do if Jayne got any ideas, Kaylee suddenly beamed, Simon's lack of clue forgotten for now. Maybe not all men were as clueless as some where, she decided, letting them both help her up off the floor.

"Hey, get yer asses down here!" Jayne bellowed from the other door. "I got me some embarrassment to hand out!"

Some were a little more clueless.
