After escaping the Reavers and getting rid of the body of the lawman, Wash managed to slip away from piloting Serenity for a few minutes. Mal had been real unhappy about it until he had heard why and then softened so much that he had even offered to fly her himself for a little while. Just to get reacquainted with the ship and her controls, of course.
Taking the stairs nearly three at a time, and about nearly killing himself in his rush, Wash found Book right outside of the Infirmary. "Good evening," he said, giving him a soft smile as he tucked his Bible under his arm.
"Shepherd," was the easy response with an easy smile. "How is she?"
Both men glanced through the window at the same time. Wash took in a deep breath at the sight of their little Kaylee laid up in that bed. The infirmary was more alive than it had been in a very long time, thanks to the doctor, but she looked so little and it froze him inside.
"She's doing as well as can be expected," Book said slowly. "She got a stubborn feel to her, quiet as though it might be. The young doctor says she will pull through, even with them having had to drag her down to the engine room. Quite a feat you lot pulled."
"Wasn't much," Wash laughed, "just a little bit of this, a little bit of that, a lot of cursing and closing our eyes. You know how it goes. Kaylee awake?"
"Was when I left but she was drifting fast, so you might want to make it quick."
Nodding, he ducked inside, not wanting to keep her awake any longer than it took to reassure himself that she was fine.
"Hey, bao bay." Grabbing a chair, Wash pulled it up to the bed as Kaylee lazily turned her head towards him and gave him a bright smile.
"Wash! Ain't you supposed ta be flyin' our gal?" The tones and how her words went up and down in a lyrical sort of way made him grin. Oh, she was drugged up but good, which was kind of funny in a sad and scary kind of way.
"Captain took a fancy to her so he tossed me out of my chair." The pout he gave her made her giggle a little bit. "Came to see how you were holding up. You doing okay?"
"Oh, I'm right shiny. The cute doctor gave him somethin' ta make me feel nice and relaxed." She scrunched up her face something awful. "Though my insides feel...funny." Frustrated, a hand waved around for a second before Wash caught it between his.
Kaylee's hand was like ice and it startled him as he cupped it against his chest to warm it up. It felt like she had been dunked in ice water. "Well, honey, I suppose they would. If someone mucked around with my insides, I suppose they'd feel rather funny as well."
"I don't like being shot," she said softly, turning her head to look at him.
"We don't like you being shot, either. Had to make sure Jayne didn't go killing that lawman after he shot you, just tied him up real tight. I’ve never seen a grown man pout like that before. And threaten to kill someone’s life at the same time, that is." And none of them had been able to convince him to come away from the window during the surgery. It had shocked Wash a little; he had never expected the big gunman to be fond of anything beyond that Vera of his.
But then again, Kaylee was different and the effect she had on the crew could be a little awe-inspiring. Wash never could figure out if it was a good thing or a bad thing that she was clueless about the entire thing.
A flash of fear crossed her eyes at the mention of the one responsible for putting her where she was. "Where is he?"
"Oh...” Wash grinned sheepishly. “Mal killed him. Jayne was a little bit irritated by that.
"Oh. Okay. Ain't right for a girl's insides to feel funny." Kaylee giggled again. "Unless it's the right kind of funny feeling inside. Doc's got a cute ass."
For a second, Wash very nearly choked on his own gorram tongue. Frowning, Kaylee tapped him in the chest with the hand that he was still holding onto. "Purple ain't your color."
"Then don't go making me swallow my tongue."
"No, that's Zoe's job." And she giggled again. After a few seconds, Wash couldn't help but snicker as well. A drugged Kaylee was kind of funny.
"You better believe it, sister," was the mock warning tone. "I best be back on my way up to the pilot's chair before Mal runs us into a planet or something."
“A planet is awfully big."
"You and I know that, I'm not sure if Mal does."
Standing up, Wash straightened the blanket and rearranged her hands under them to keep them warm. Leaning down, he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "You tell your insides to stop feeling funny and get better real quick," he murmured, the knot of pain and fear lessening now, "because we already miss you. Besides, I need to ask Mal for a new piece of equipment and you know what he'll say if I ask."
"Choo fay wuh suh leh."
"Exactly."
"Me and my insides will be up and around 'fore you know it," Kaylee assured him, yawning deeply.
"...promise?"
"Promise."
